A record twenty one Golf Managers from thirteen different countries recently attended a residential training programme hosted by the Club Managers Association of Europe in St Andrews, the home of golf.
The course in Golf Management is part of the CMAE’s Management Development Programme (MDP), an educational pathway consisting of five residential courses covering all of the competencies of the modern golf club manager.

The delegates benefited from a programme focused specifically on golf operations and management, covering 16 subjects in 5 days including Golf Course and Turf Management from Dr Paul Miller, a course tour of the St Andrews Links with Gordon McKie and David Roy, Rules of Golf from Claire Hargan of the R&A, Golf technology with Steve Otto of the R&A, Pace of Play Principles from John Grant of the St Andrews Links Trust, the Golf Business Model for clubs by Kevin Fish and John Kemp of Scottish Golf and Golf Operations delivered by Simon Wordsworth, Phil Barnard and Joe Kelly of the PGA.
The programme facilitator and CMAEs Director of Education Michael Braidwood, said “We were delighted by the international turn out for this valuable programme. The itinerary we put on covered every aspect of managing a successful golf operation and our partners at the PGA, The R&A, St Andrews Links Trust and BIGGA demonstrated best practice in all disciplines. We will continue to work together to further enhance this already excellent programme. The benefit of having representatives from 13 different countries really added to the networking and sharing of ideas component to the programme.”
The MDP pathway was originally developed by the Club Managers Association of America and thanks to their vision and generosity has been given to CMAE who adapted the materials for the European Golf, Sports and City Club Markets.
