Q&A with Fraser Robertson, CCM

Congratulations Fraser – You are now a CCM. What is your feeling after hearing the beautiful words “You have passed” after sitting the exam for 8 hours?
I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved; it’s been a mental marathon. The CCM qualification requires a huge amount of effort and now being part of the CMAE and worldwide CCMs feels like a huge accomplishment.

Your career have taken you from Elie through Lundin Links to wonderful Kingsbarns. What has been your best takeaways from all those places, since they are very different!
My time at Elie was a fantastic entry into the world of golf, starting at 16 years of age I learned a ton from very experienced staff to influential members of the golf club. From intense Junior coaching during the holidays to dealing with Tennis courts, driving range and at the time one of the best Pro Shops in the area.

This was a fantastic stepping stone to Lundin Golf Club. Working at another prestigious venue would only enhance my knowledge and skills. Lundin is a highly sought-after members club offering one of the best Links courses in the area. My experience working with Ron Walker and the fantastic membership helped me secure a position at Kingsbarns..

I’ve spent nine wonderful years at Kingsbarns, from starting as an assistant in retail and operations to becoming Deputy Golf Operations Manager and finally Retail Manager. This role has been the best in my career so far. Alan Hogg encouraged my creativity, and I brought fun to the golf shop. Managing a team of 10-12 fantastic staff members per season has been a great learning experience for me as a manager.

You are now heading to a new job – tell us all about it!
I’m excited to begin a new chapter as Head Professional at Hogs Haven Golf Club.
I look forward to creating a distinctive and memorable experience for both members and their guests, while helping to build a unique golfing environment from day one.
Being part of the pre-opening team is a rare opportunity, and I’m eager to contribute to shaping the club’s future alongside a passionate team.

You have been very golf focused in your career – what do you do besides golf for fun?
In 2017, my close friends encouraged me to try skiing or snowboarding. Snowboarding was a definite no-go; I couldn’t stand up let alone descend a slope without causing harm.

However, I gave skiing a go and instantly fell in love. Once I got the hang of it, I was hooked! Skiing is truly the most liberating activity imaginable. Standing at the top of a run under a brilliant blue sky is breathtakingly beautiful. It’s incredibly quiet and serene, just you, your skis and the next turn ahead. You don’t need to worry about anything else.

I have two young children, aged four and one. Most of my time outside of work is spent playing dinosaurs, monster trucks or watching the best kids’ TV show, Bluey.

You have been on the CCM Pathway for a few years now, what are some of your best memories from it?
The MDPs have been fantastic. The networking is second to none in the golf industry and I’ve had the pleasure of visiting some lovely places. Setúbal in Portugal for MDP Leadership and Strategy was a charming town steeped in history. The World Conference was held in Tampa and St Andrews, though the latter is quite local to me. Attending MDP Golf was a great time regardless of the location. It’s not necessarily the places that create the memories but the incredible people you meet at the MDPs.

With regards to your career and now also being a CCM – what would you recommend young people thinking about career development?
The CMAE and its pathway equip you with the tools to create a joyful and fun workplace environment. Leading people and witnessing their success and growth brings immense satisfaction.

Any final comments:
Thank you to everyone that is and has been a part of my journey,
