Obbi, in collaboration with key industry partners like Gallagher Insurance, GCMA, CMAE, SGCMA, CMAI and UK Golf Federation, has released its annual Club Safety and Compliance Report for 2024/25, revealing the persistent and evolving challenges clubs face in managing Safety, Compliance, and Training. The findings highlight significant constraints in time and budget, hindering the effective implementation of essential health and safety (H&S) measures across the industry. In response, Obbi along with Gallaghers will be hosting educational webinars to address the pain points of club managers and answer safety and compliance questions on 12th November 2024 at 2:00pm.

The survey, which collected responses from clubs across the UK and Ireland, reveals that 72% of participants believe their checks, audits, mandatory certificates, and training are not always fully up to date. Additionally, 70% state that their evidence of compliance activities is not easily accessible, complicating efforts to demonstrate compliance during audits. These challenges are further exacerbated by the fact that over a third of clubs still rely on pen and paper for managing safety compliance and training processes.

Survey participants highlighted several key pain points related to safety, compliance, and training at clubs. Time and budget constraints significantly limit the ability of General Managers (GMs) to conduct adequate training and regular compliance checks, often leading to lapses in crucial safety procedures. There is also a widespread lack of clarity and understanding of H&S requirements among staff, contributing to inconsistent compliance and increased risk of liability. Additionally, the high costs and low engagement in training programs result in poorly trained staff, further elevating the risk of accidents. Inefficient record-keeping and outdated safety procedures compound these challenges, making it difficult for GMs to demonstrate compliance and stay current with legislative changes, ultimately exposing clubs to potential legal and financial repercussions.

Gareth Macklin, CEO of Obbi, commented on the report:

“The results of this year’s survey highlight the growing pressure on clubs to maintain high standards of safety and compliance in the face of ever-increasing operational challenges. It’s clear that without the right resources, training, and support, many clubs are struggling to keep up with the demands of health and safety regulations. This not only puts their operations at risk but also the safety of their members and staff. At Obbi, we are committed to providing the tools clubs need to navigate these complexities and ensure a safer environment for all.”

Neil Hunter, Director at Gallagher Insurance, emphasised the importance of addressing these challenges:

“As the Director of Gallagher Insurance, I have seen firsthand the growing complexities that clubs face in managing safety, compliance, and training. These are critical areas that not only impact the day-to-day operations but also the long-term sustainability of the clubs. The risks associated with non-compliance, including legal liabilities and financial penalties, make it clear that more support and resources are needed. At Gallagher Insurance, we are proud to partner with Obbi in providing guidance and solutions that help clubs navigate these challenges and create a safer environment for everyone involved.”

Obbi remains committed to supporting clubs of all sizes in meeting their safety, compliance and training obligations, to work towards a safer environment for members and staff alike.
