Meet the team – Toby Johansson

What’s your job title and How long have you worked at CMAE?

My title is CEO, when I started it was Director of Education. I started in October 2017, become CEO after 5 years.

What does your role entail?

My main tasks are to support our staff of five in order for them to be able to do their job – I am fortunate to have great people surrounding me – which includes the Board where I am responsible of executing our Strategic Plan. Besides those main tasks I have a lot of international contacts where Jason Koenigsfeld at CMAA is the person I speak to the most, another treat in my job!

What does a typical working week look like for you?

My average week does not really exist. The start of 2026 have had a lot of travel, calms down a bit later this year. But I am fortunate to see variables in my job that get me to write a lot of reports, have meetings with people across the globe, do Board Meetings online and in person as well as deliver education on MDP/BMI 2 and facilitate MDP/BMI Strategy & Leadership. Each week have a Team Meeting, a number of meetings and catch up with amazing people.

Where in the world are you based?

I am based in Stockholm, Sweden. Here is one of the biggest challenges with leading and supporting a team where no one has an office to go to. We meet online every week, but only physically meet with the full team 2-3 times per year.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

I am excited to have seen the team grow from 1 person to now 6 people working for CMAE. That has been very rewarding. But it is without a doubt two things that are the most rewarding. One – to have been Director of Education for five years and got to spend an enormous amount of time with world class people and educators such as Kevin Fish, Bill Sanderson, Darshan Singh, Jules Murray and many others. Now I get to spend time with John Bull and Jeffrey Kreafle on each MDP/BMI 3 who are extraordinary people.

Two – to meet people in our industry who have this amazing mindset of being great at their job, network and make friends across the world and still perceptive to education. I just love see them grow, sometimes during our training week – but also after through their job and achievements.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I am a proud football coach of my oldest son’s football team. Coached them since they started at 5 years old, now they turn 12! And I am also president of the football club, which takes a bit of time. Love playing golf but don’t do that enough – like most of us. Love to travel which was and still is a good thing for this job……..
Most important for me is to be there for my boys.

Favourite sports team?

As a sports person, have a few teams in different sports. Biggest love is Aston Villa, cheered for them since I was 5 years old (as my father also favoured the team). In Ice Hockey I go for HV71, Swedish team. In NFL it is Seattle Seahawks as when I got interested, it was the favourite team of my American friend “Moose” when I studied in Australia a loooong time ago.
