Twenty-one club industry professionals attended the most recent residential Managing Development Programme (MDP) course – MDP 3 Strategy and Leadership hosted by CMAE in Sweden’s snowy and scenic capital Stockholm.

Delegates travelled from 10 different countries – Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Oman and Cyprus to attend the MDP Part 3 course, which is the highest level course in the executive education pathway provided by CMAE which consists of five residential courses covering all of the competencies of the modern club manager.

The delegates benefited from a schedule that focused specifically on raising their leadership competencies whilst delving deeper into topics such as advanced financial management, personal development, club ethics and marketing demographics. The delegates also had their Lumina Leadership Profile analyzed to help them become better and more aware leaders.

Outside of the classroom delegates were able to sample some of the Swedish cuisine at local restaurants and on Thursday night were treated to a night at the ice hockey watching DIF vs Malmo at the Globe Arena.

Commenting on the week CMAE’s Director of Education said “Hosting the MDP 3 Strategy & Leadership in my home town of Stockholm was special for me and I was delighted to see the course in such high demand. We had a great and diverse group of delegates who all added value to the programme by sharing their experiences. The level of education and network gained through attending these programmes are essential for any club manager who is serious about progressing in this industry.”

Phil Worthington, General Manager of Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club and delegate on the course commented on the week “A fantastic opportunity to meet other like minded managers who aid the process of discussing complex subjects. Strategy and Leadership are now integral parts of our job, and the insight offered to help us all look at what we already do, coupled with we sometimes don’t see, is excellent. It’s an in depth week but well worth it.”

Also commenting on the course, Joyce Burnett, General Manager at Helensburgh Golf Club said “Whether it was due to the relevancy of information or the diverse group of Managers present MDP3 in Stockholm was possibly the best of the education weeks so far. The week was full on as expected but the discussions which each timetabled event led on to have given me personally, great ideas, techniques, and shared knowledge as well as confidence in my own leadership ability.”

MDP 3 Strategy and Leadership is the fifth and final course, developed by CMAE which completes the pathway that sees club industry professionals across Europe embark on an educational journey to enhance their overall abilities to run successful clubs.
Within the pathway there are two levels of qualification: the European Club Management Diploma which is attainable after completing MDP Parts 1 and 2 and the coveted International Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation which can be obtained by examination after completing MDP parts 1 – 3 plus either MDP F&B or MDP Golf.

The MDP pathway was originally developed by the Club Managers Association of America and thanks to their vision and generosity has been given to CMAE who adapted the materials for the European Golf, Sports and City Club Markets.
