Three CMAE Scottish Region members recently attended the 88th World Conference on Club Management in San Antonio, Texas thanks to a bursary grant from leading Insurance Provider, Circle Golf.

Circle Golf annually donate £1,500 to CMAE Scottish Region, to help subsidise a trip to the CMAA World Conference for three Scottish Region members who are on the CMAE Education Pathway and have achieved the European Club Manager Diploma.

Ian Smith, Divisional Director of Circle Golf, said of the bursaries “Circle Golf are delighted to sponsor Scottish Club Managers education and supporting three Club Industry Professionals annually, to attend the World Conference, really has a positive impact”

The three recipients of the bursary this year were Gavin Cook PGA Professional of Elie Sport Club, David Brodie Club Manager of Glenbervie Golf Club and David Gemmell PGA Professional of Aberdour Golf Club.

Commenting on his experience Gavin Cook said “I thoroughly enjoyed the CMAA World Conference in San Antonio. There was a fantastic depth of different subjects covered throughout the many seminars with something to interest anyone involved in the club industry.

My favourite seminar at World Conference was Gregg Patterson’s Judgment Day. I left “feeling the love the buzz and the glow” as you do after every time hearing Gregg.

The networking opportunities with other managers were great and gave a real insight into club management in the US.

Attending also made me appreciate the quality of speakers and education we receive at home through the MDP education and CMAE. Some of the speakers we have appearing in Scotland were filling halls of over 1000 people in the US!”

David Gemmell added “I attended 19 education sessions on varying subjects. The main focus was on leadership skills, membership retention, membership recruitment and governance. I think my stand out seminar of the week was a fantastic open forum session with the four CEO’s of the USPGA, USGA, CMAA and the GCSAA.

The purpose of the session was to show how all four organisations are trying to put their individual differences aside to all work together for the good of the game.

Very Powerful. Our thanks goes out to Circle Golf for their kind support of this visit”

The 2016 World Conference is hosted by the Club Managers of America (CMAA) from 21st to 25th February in San Diego. Attendance at a minimum of one World Conference is mandatory for Club Industry professionals wishing to sit the Certified Club Manager exam.
