Urban myths abound in the current era of instant ‘facts’ and it is often reported that we are only ever ten steps from a rat in an urban area, which is of course ridiculous.

What is certainly true is that we are only ever three steps from disaster, which is closer than most of us are comfortable with. Ask yourself this:
1. If your clubhouse burnt down tonight, could you have your club operational by tomorrow afternoon?
2. Should someone die at your club from food poisoning, can you prove that all reasonable steps have been taken to prevent this from happening?
3. If a member of staff was to be killed by faulty equipment, can you prove you have not been negligent?
Many of us operate on a calculated risk analysis. We sum up the likely risk that we may be prosecuted, or the club may be destroyed by fire and on balance spend more time on the problem in front of us, rather than those less obvious.
Is this wise? It is hardly difficult to mitigate against these risks and you will have the support of your committee or owner in preventing possible disaster.
