Club Secretary, Aldeburgh Golf Club

Swilcan has been exclusively retained by Aldeburgh Golf Club to source their new Club Secretary. An outstanding opportunity to lead one of England’s premier traditional golf clubs. Reporting to the Captain and Committee, the Club Secretary will have overall responsibility for the leadership and management of the Club, supported by an Assistant Secretary and an experienced management team.

This is a broad leadership role combining strategic direction, governance, financial management, operational excellence and member engagement, while protecting the traditions and character that make the Club distinctive.

THE ROLE

The Club Secretary will:

  • Provide visible and effective leadership across all areas of the Club.
  • Lead, develop and support a high-performing management team, fostering collaboration and clear accountability.
  • Work closely with the Captain and Committee to develop and deliver the Club’s long-term strategic objectives.
  • Provide independent, balanced advice to the Committee on operational, financial and governance matters.
  • Lead the Club’s governance processes, including Committee support, regulatory compliance and Company Secretary responsibilities where required.
  • Take responsibility for annual budgets, forecasting, financial performance, cash flow and cost control.
  • Oversee the Club’s operations, including the clubhouse, golf, food & beverage, estate, events and competitions.
  • Work closely with the Clubhouse Manager, Course Manager and Head Professional to maintain consistently high standards.
  • Build strong relationships with members and oversee membership administration, elections, communications and member relations.
  • Identify appropriate opportunities to grow revenues and maximise the use of Club facilities while maintaining the right balance between member enjoyment and visitor activity.
  • Recruit, develop and retain high-quality people and cultivate future leaders within the Club.
  • Lead appropriate change and continuous improvement while respecting the Club’s history, culture and traditions.
  • Ensure robust management of compliance, health & safety, employment, licensing, safeguarding, data protection, insurance and wider organisational risk.
  • Protect and further enhance the Club’s reputation as one of England’s leading traditional golf clubs.

THE CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will be an accomplished and credible leader with the judgement and interpersonal skills required to operate effectively within a prestigious private members’ environment.

They will combine strong commercial and operational capability with an appreciation of governance, tradition and exceptional member service.

Above all, they will be a visible, engaging and trusted leader capable of bringing together members, staff and the Committee around the Club’s long-term ambitions.
