Why Committees Kill Clubs

The number one reason most clubs fail is not poorly thought out strategy, the wrong location or lack of funds it’s EGO! Simple human ego destroys more clubs and destroys more relationships than any other factor.

When people or committees make business or marketing decisions that are based on ego rather a proven plan towards the orchestrated accomplishment of clear financial goals, they make poor decisions.

Decisions are based on what whims, not what actually works.

Decisions are made based on vanity and not what makes the phone ring.

Decisions are made to keep poor performing staff under the cover of “loyalty” and caring, but really just want to look good.

Resources are devoted to reserved parking spaces, blazer badges, photos and club events rather than in building functional and creative working environments, supporting staff and assisting in driving change.

Egotists only champion initiatives brought to the Board table by themselves, only to discard them when the going gets tough, instead of working the plan they have in place to a logical conclusion.

The big egos on the Board control the easy targets. The people they can boss around; people who won’t, or can’t talk back or challenge their ego. They ignore the people who are pose a barrier to progression.

The ultimate sadness is when high performing staff are blamed for failure, which inevitably happens when a Board make business and marketing decisions driven by EGO rather than proven principles and the pursuit of a worthy goal.
