Opening and maintaining a new course to such a high standard in the desert is very challenging and would not be possible without the availability of Syngenta’s wide range of preventative products. Course Superintendent Darren Smith described the challenges he faces, on a daily basis.

“the climate in Qatar is very hot in the summer months and as we move out of summer it becomes extremely humid. These are idea conditions for fungi and other turf grass diseases. We have implemented a rigorous preventative programme that sees us use Heritage Maxx which we use to protect us against Brown patch, Pythium and several other Diseases on the golf course. In addition Medallion is a preventive and knockdown broad spectrum product to kill and prevent against Bipolaris spp, Drechslera spp, Brown patch, dollar spot as well as other various diseases and we also use Velista

Protect against Anthracnose, Brown Patch, Curvularia Leaf Spot, Dollar Spot. These diseases can spread rapidly and with devastating effect, so the preventative plan is essential.

However, it is not only fungal diseases that attack the turf grass, we have been infested with African Black Beetle, Argentine Stem Weevil, Argentinian Scarab, Billbugs, Cutworm, Armyworm and Webworm at various stages of the project. These pests cause a huge amount of damage and we have found that Syngenta’s products are the only safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly products that have helped us break the breeding cycle. Acelepryn provides safe and effective control of a wide range of turf damaging insects while also minimizing the impact on the environment. After application 6 months protection is provided. In addition Spinner Is a knockdown with 3 month prevention of African black beetle, Army worm, sod web worm and other insects in the soil. We are confident now that we have these issues under control with a well-managed IPM program in place and the quality of the turf is testimony to that.”
