Employing a Club Manager
Traditionally, when recruiting senior executives or middle management, clubs have relied on personal networking, contacts or industry advertising. But in an increasingly competitive environment, where the need to find outstanding individuals is ever more pressing, such methods present significant and unnecessary risks.
When recruiting a club manager, club committees and owners have relied on advertising in trade journals or word of mouth – producing someone who might be good, but not necessarily the best, or the most appropriate for their club. The club industry has a long track record of bad appointments with serious consequences - for example, the average time spent at a club in the UK is only 2.5 years !
Modren clubs - both member-owned and commercially-owned have to have the correct people running their facilities. The future of clubs relies on exceptional people delivering outstanding performance. Today’s marketplace demands outstanding people – the bar has been raised.
The CMAE believes that employers are able to narrow-down their list of applicants by looking for those that have the 'CCM' designation to their name. This 'Certified Club Manager' status shows a club manager who is serious about their profession - one that has proven their knowledge, skills and experience by passing a tough test of ten core club management competencies.
With an increasing number of Europe's most experienced and talented club managers planning to take the CCM exam in the next few years, the pool of CCMs will be getting larger every year. Even those who have committed themselves to take the exam in the near future will be talented club managers, as it is the CMAE's intention to maintain the very highest standards within the CCM eligibility criteria (so there will be no fast-track to take the exam) and the exam itself (to maintain the reputation already establsihed in the USA, Canada, South Africa, China and elsewhere around the world), so that the CCM is the global benchmark of a professional club manager.
